February 2025, World: Publication of UN report on a human rights dimension of care and support

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights recently published its report on international human rights standards relevant to care and support, promising practices and challenges, and suggested recommendations on promoting human rights in care and support systems (A/HRC/58/43). In particular, it provides an overview of general principles, the rights of those providing and of those requiring care and support, whilst also addressing a right to self-care. It is also very useful in sharing promising practices worldwide. CHIP had provided inputs into the drafting of the report focusing particularly on children in alternative care and welcomes that the right to identity and family relations are therefore reflected in this document (see Para. 16). We are therefore grateful to the OHCHR for having taken into account CHIP’s contributiion to the process and look forward to continue supporting UN agencies and bodies in offering visibility to children’s rights to identity in a diversity of circumstances.
