Symposium/Webinar on Child’s Right to Identity in Assisted Reproductive Technology
Assisted reproductive technology, including recourse to surrogacy, is increasingly being used for family formation. Children born through these methods have the same rights as all children under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). However, the human rights of children born through these methods are at risk of multiple violations, particularly their rights to identity (Article 8 CRC) and to not be sold according to the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography (OPSC). When a child is missing identity information and/or their identity is sold, this can have a lifelong impact of a legal, medical and/or psychosocial nature.
