Council of Europe’s Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons adopts report on the protection and alternative care of children on the move
The Council of Europe’s Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons recently and unanimously adopted the report ‘Protection and alternative care for unaccompanied and separated migrant and refugee children’ (Doc. 15548), which includes a specific part on the current situation in Ukraine and its impact on children on the move towards and in other Member States of the Council of Europe. This report was submitted by Rapporteur Mariia Mezentseva and benefited from significant inputs from CHIP’s team members. In particular, CHIP ensured the inclusion of numerous relevant international and regional standards as well as case-law and provided a high number of examples of promising practices and remaining challenges relating to the protection, care and identity of these children, such as the registration of the latter, the determination of children’s identity and family situation and the recognition and portability of children’s identity documents. It is hoped that this report will now also be adopted at the forthcoming plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly. Finally, the Committee also tabled a motion for a resolution (Doc. 15112) in this field, also based on CHIP’s suggested key points.
