Emergency maternal health units reach farthest corners of the Philippines

The storm Rai forced hundreds of thousands to leave their house. After nearly four months, many people do not have housing or access to food or medical care. Health staff don’t have clinics to work in. A truck, a UNFPA-supported Women’s Health on Wheels vehicle, a mobile birthing facility, was put in place. The rapid response mobile units are the default set-up when basic emergency obstetric and newborn care services are disrupted. The risk of lack of birth registration in emergency situations is very high. CHIP welcomes this initiative which shows that solutions can be found, and that birth registration could be improved in emergency situations if the health staff had the ability to register birth.
