Ensuring Human Rights in Burkina Faso, one baby at time

Birth registrations in Burkina Faso used to require long and costly journeys to civil registries and many parents did not register their children’ births. With iCivil (a digital Civil Registration and Vital Statistics platform where births are registered in real-time), every newborn in Burkina Faso gets a bracelet with a unique code that links to their digital birth certificate:  Using smartphones and wristbands with unique identifiers, midwives can register births directly into the national system and create for each child a digital medical record since his/her birth. This procedure guarantees a child’s access to a lifetime of public services, far beyond health care. The data can also help health workers assess the age of the mother to identify cases of child marriage and target family planning support. CHIP welcomes this initiative which constitutes a real progress, which not only guarantees efficient birth registrations, but also access to other rights. According to CHIP, it is an important step forward for a better realisation of the right of the child to identity, particularly in terms of creation and preservation of the child’s identity.
