Euradopt conference on sustainability of intercountry adoptions
Co-hosted by Danish International Adoption, Euradopt held its 14th edition of its conference with 180 participants from over 30 countries. Both research and the voices of adoptees reiterated the importance of identity rights. Child Identity Protection (CHIP) had the honour of presenting on the State’s responsibility to preserve and restore identities of adoptees. CHIP explored with the audience opportunities for facilitating the co-existence of the child/adoptee’s identity at birth and their “new” identity, in cases where intercountry adoption is in the best interests of the child. CHIP stressed the importance of acknowledging the life-long and intergenerational impact of an intercountry adoption, resulting in State’s responsibility to preserve the continuity of identity past the adoption order. CHIP was encouraged to see the overwhelming agreement that identity rights are an integral part of the sustainability of any intercountry adoption.
