Global Report on Children’s Care and Protection 2024
On the International Day of Care and Support, SOS Children’s Villages unveiled its first Global Report on Children’s Care and Protection, spotlighting the critical issue of child-family separation. Supported by Member Associations in nine countries, the report explores the root causes of separation, including poverty, inequality, and violence, and stresses the negative impact on children’s well-being.
The report calls for investment in family- and community-based care alternatives, effective gatekeeping mechanisms, and regular placement reviews to ensure safe, nurturing environments for children only when necessary. A significant concern highlighted is the lack of birth registration in low- and middle-income countries like Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, and Côte d’Ivoire. This prevents access to essential social services and increases the risk of alternative care placements.
SOS Children’s Villages advocates for enhanced social services, streamlined application processes, and expanded birth registration efforts to combat these challenges. Child Identity Protection (CHIP) echoes these recommendations, emphasizing the importance of tailored outreach and decentralized services to help vulnerable families, particularly in remote areas, access the support to remain with their families to preserve family identity.
