Impact of separating siblings on identity

A recent BBC News contribution and related documentary have addressed the complex implications of separation from siblings when children are placed into care. The piece was drafted by Ashley John-Baptiste, who was himself placed in care and later discovered the existence of siblings. The piece also showcases the story of Saskia, who was separated from her brothers while placed in care, when these were in fact “a key part of” of herself. Both mention how siblings and the separation from them has had a clear impact on their sense of identity during childhood but also later in life. Thus, CHIP welcomes this media coverage of such an essential right of children in care and is committed to ensure it is fully addressed in its advocacy work with and for these children.
