Initiatives and developments in CRVS systems in the region
Child Identity Protection (CHIP) welcomes the solid efforts undertaken by the Regional Steering Group (RSG) for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) in Asia and the Pacific. Most relevant is the recent consensus – at the RSG’s ninth meeting with the participation of 26 country participants and 16 development partners – on the need for extending the CRVS Decade beyond the initial 2015-2024 period. It is also worth mentioning other key initiatives, including a regional workshop for the CRVS Inequality Assessment project in Asia and the Pacific, a partnership between the Samoa Bureau of Statistics and the United Nations Development Programme to strengthen birth registration and the CRVS system in Samoa, as well as a new procedure for registering births via a QR code introduced in Uzbekistan. Undoubtedly, these efforts contribute to moving closer to compliance with Articles 7 and 8 of the UNCRC and SDG 16.9 at national level and collectively in the region. Thus, CHIP welcomes and congratulates all partners involved in the development and implementation of these promising practices and reiterates its commitment to support the latter in safeguarding children’s right to identity in family relations.
