Interruption of intercountry adoptions in Flanders?
The Belgian Flemish Family Minister is suggesting to the government to suspend intercountry adoption in Flanders (Flemish part of the country) for 2 years in order to reform the Flemish adoption system. This is based on the report of a group of experts set up following fraudulent intercountry adoption practices and two years of investigations. The experts suggest among other recommendations to truly consider intercountry adoption as a last resort measure, especially the importance of supporting the family of origin in their local community, culture and religious environment. Another point raised by the experts is the public acknowledgment of past mistakes. It is clear that the link to commercial aspects of ICAs has led to significant abuses. There is wide agreement that there is a need for reforms, but not yet how to undertake them. Child Identity Protection supports the findings, especially related to the preservation of family relations of the child’s origins and the urgent need for reforms in this area.
