Joint UN statement on the protection of Haitian migrants
Several UN agencies issued a joint statement calling for greater protection and a comprehensive regional approach for Haitians on the move, including accompanied and unaccompanied and separated children. Indeed, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) called for strengthened mechanisms to respond to various populations movements in the American region and their variety of protection needs. These include respect for these children’s identity rights, as they cross borders, enter the protection and migration systems in transit countries or when returned to Haiti, with a need to recognise their identity documents and their family relations.
