Launch of the guide on the adoption of siblings
In a recent webinar organised in the framework of Chile’s Adoption Month 2024, the Project ‘AdoptARTE: Strengthening a child-centred perspective in adoption research, policy and practice’, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Specialised Protection Service for Children and Adolescents of the Government of Chile, Corporación OPCIÓN and Child Identity Protection (CHIP) launched the guide Caminando hacia la adopción. Orientaciones para la adopción conjunta de hermanos/as o contactos post-adoptivos.
The guide is aimed at adoptive families and is intended to facilitate the adoption of groups of siblings. It emphasises the importance of sibling relationships, the benefits of adopting siblings as well as its challenges, the importance of professional support in the process and offers general guidelines for strengthening the joint adoption of a group of siblings. It also addresses the complex decision to separate siblings and, in that case, the importance of contact arrangements and plans and how to support them.
CHIP welcomes the opportunity to having contributed to this key resource in which the child’s right to identity and family relations in the adoption process is a central element. This guide adds to CHIP’s policy note on alternative sibling group care, reflecting the importance of taking groups of siblings into account in the child protection system.
