Promoting birth registration at the African Cup of Nations

Mobilising this regional sport event, UNICEF with leading football players and the private sector have launched a campaign #MyName. Footballers such as Sebastien Haller, Kalidou Koulibaly and Aliou Cissé have explained through short videos that without birth registration, a child cannot reach their dreams including playing at such events. The attention to the issue as well as the collective efforts by Government, society and all actors to give attention to this vital issue is sure to bear fruit. For example, in Cote d’Ivoire, registration booths have been set up in the context of football matches ahead of the African Cup, giving families the chance to register children. In addition, Cote d’Ivoire, has removed late registration fees to tackle financial obstacles.

Child Identity Protection (CHIP) is excited about such initiatives and looks forward to seeing more children registered, given that the continent represents more than half of the 166 million children under five who have not been registered. The video is particularly attractive in its short format, accesible, convincing and inspirational for all.
