Screening of the documentary “Juan”, an illustration of the process of restoration of identity
CHIP was honoured to co-organise with the Geneva association Espace A the screening of the documentary “Juan” in Geneva on 29 September and to host a round table discussion to which adoption professionals and adoptees were invited. This event, and the rich discussion that followed, enabled a better understanding of the issues at stake in any process of restoration of identity for adopted persons who have been victims of irregular procedures. CHIP commends the approach of the documentary “Juan”, which highlights the points of view of each of the parties involved and the specific needs of each. Furthermore, it highlights the challenges inherent in any search for origins and the essential nature of quality professional support. This documentary is also an excellent advocacy tool for States to respect their obligations under Articles 7 and 8 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the 1993 Adoption Convention to preserve and restore the identity of all children throughout their lives.
