A statistical profile of birth registration in Africa, UNICEF
The report reminds us that “society first acknowledges a child’s existence and identity through birth registration ». It then mentions that « of the 168 million unregistered children worldwide, more than half (around 96 million) live in Africa, nearly all of them in sub-Saharan Africa” and that many registered children lack proof, as 118 million children in Africa do not have a birth certificate. The report highlights the fact that it is urgent to accelerate the progress or these numbers will continue to increase. Solutions would consist in three policy directions: decentralization, digitization and interoperability, which would increase coverage of birth registration while promoting cost-efficient service delivery.
