As part of a series on use of technology, such as mobile phones, to help preserve identity – a webinar with leading experts was held on 9 March 2022 to discuss the challenges and opportunities for ensuring a legal identity for all (SDG 16.9). It has been noted that “in the development context, policies such as SIM registration have set the stage for SIM numbers and mobile phones to become the proxy to individual digital identity. As such, access to mobile phones becomes a key prerequisite for inclusion.” Child Identity Protection (CHIP) welcomes these innovative awareness raising activities to ensure that stakeholders capitalise on the benefits that new technologies provide to achieving SDG 16.9 in a way that is aligned with human rights standards.
